Operation Demon

The dramatic oil painting depicted above was painted by my friend, the late Robert Blackwell, and shows the Dutch troopship Slamat heavily on fire, with HM destroyer Diamond close by picking up survivors. HMS Wryneck can be seen in the distance racing in to assist with the rescue. Not content with damaging and setting Slamat on fire; the German pilots circled round to machine-gun people in the water. Here is a letter written by Helen Hardy and received on 29 December 2021:

Myself and my Dad (Kelvin Hardy) would like to thank Brian Crabb for our very detailed copy of Operation Demon. If it wasn’t for this book we would have probably still been searching for answers as to what happened to my Great Grandad, Lance Bombardier William Travers (seen in picture) A very sombre photograph in the book was SS Slamat from a distance just after it had been bombed, it made my heart break as my Great Grandad was on this ship and may have still been alive at the point it was taken 😢. Although we still do not know which of the three ships he perished on, we now know that the last place he walked on solid ground was Nauplion, which will now be a special place to our family and I definitely intend on visiting 💗🇬🇷
Thank you once again to Brian Crabb, author of Operation Demon for his extensive research. Because of his book we have saved a fortune in ancestry/war records subscriptions.
Merry Christmas and Kalá Christoúgenna

BOOK OF THE MONTH

OPERATION DEMON

The story of the evacuation of British Commonwealth troops from mainland Greece and the tragic loss of the Dutch troopship Slamat and HM destroyers Diamond and Wryneck in April 1941

by Brian James Crabb

This book reveals the true story of the clandestine evacuation of just over 51,000 British Commonwealth troops from mainland Greece in late April 1941. Because of the aerial supremacy enjoyed by the Luftwaffe, which was brought about by the swiftness of the German invasion, the operation had to be carried out during a moonless period of darkness. The first two nights were reasonably successful, except for one unfortunate incident at Návplion, which happened on the first night of Demon. The MV Ulster Prince had tried to enter the harbour to speed up the evacuation. Unfortunately, she ran aground in the fairway, blocking the entrance and preventing the use of destroyers. The effort would prove to be the catalyst of a chain of events that occurred on the night of 26 April and the following day. A major maritime disaster which [until now] has remained virtually untold [and somewhat lost in the mist of time].

OPERATION DEMON - 2021
A new book entitled 'Operation Demon' (ISBN 978-1-527271-01-2) tells the story of the evacuation of Allied troops from mainland Greece in April 1941 and includes intricate details of the tragic loss of the Dutch troopship Slamat and HM destroyers Diamond and Wryneck on 27 April 1941.
This incredible book is now in print and was launched on 17 December 2020. Below is a list of all the known casualties and the names of all of the few survivors. The print run is 500. The cost is £25.00 plus £3.69p 2nd Class postage, within the United Kingdom. If anyone is interested in purchasing a copy please email: briancrabb@talktalk.net

EMAILS TO THE AUTHOR BRIAN CRABB IN 2021

Thank you Brian.
You have authored an excellent book.
It is nice to have these details and records in one publication - your book has 'Pride of Place' in our little Reference Library.
The story of the evacuation of mainland Greece will never be forgotten.
I have been asked to say on behalf of our family that still gathers each 27 April to remember one Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Great-Great-Grandfather, and 3 x Great-Grandfather who died in the Dutch troopship Slamat on that fateful day - THANK YOU.
We will never forget.
Very Best Wishes
David G. Bayliss - 16 February 2021

Hello Brian Crabb
I just wanted to thank you for the really wonderful book that you have put together and published... you really have a gift. So much research, dedication and an obvious love of history has now enabled others to discover and learn about this mostly unheard of chapter of our history.
I knew very little about my grandfather (Staff Sergeant Harry Henry Plumley MM) other than he had died in Greece. My Dad, his son, Harry Minden Plumley, who was also in the war as a young man, never liked to talk about his wartime experiences.
But, certainly, this book brings us that much closer to knowing more about his passing. I will certainly treasure this book... it is a beautiful tribute.

Thank You Sincerely
Nigel Plumley - 13 February 2021

FIRST BOOK REVIEW

In my 62 years of studying and writing about the Navy in World War Two, I was pleasantly startled by the depth and thoroughness of Brian Crabb’ s most recent book entitled OPERATION DEMON.

OPERATION DEMON is an account of the evacuation of Greece in April 1941. Covered is the period leading up to the fall of Greece and day by day narrative of the evacuation. Included is the lesser known loss of men in cruiser Perth’s pinnace, swamped in high seas. Detailed is the sinking of the Dutch troopship Slamat and British destroyers Diamond and Wryneck, with terrible loss of life, in this operation.

In the appendices, all men lost in Operation DEMON are named and listed by the ship and the cemeteries or memorials they appear. Further appendices include awards given for the operation, detail the Aegean convoys from the beginning of March 1941 to their conclusion and photographs of many of the men shown.

This a good read and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting to read about the evacuation of Greece in April 1941.

Review by Don Kindell - 5 January 2021

(Don Kindell’s contribution to Royal Navy history has been enormous over a very long period. An American, he became fascinated by the Royal Navy over 40 years ago and has devoted a large part of his life to this work. All has been done with meticulous attention to detail and accuracy).

2nd Book Review

Until I read Brian Crabb's excellent book 'Operation Demon', I had never actually heard of this major undertaking. In most histories of World War II the operation has not been covered in such accurate detail, and I was surprised and pleased to see that over 51,000 troops of the British Commonwealth were successfully evacuated from mainland Greece in April 1941, prior to occupation by the Wehrmacht. This remarkable achievement was gained despite almost constant harassment by Axis air forces, the result of which was the tragic loss of the Dutch troopship Slamat and the subsequent sinking of HM destroyers Diamond and Wryneck with some 1,000 allied troops. I am glad to see Brian has gone a long way to exonerate the Dutch master of Slamat, Captain Tjalling Luidinga for his brave decision to delay departure in order to rescue more troops. The book is a fine tribute to this honourable captain, along with the officers, crew and troops aboard all three vessels involved in this seldom heard-of disaster.
Like all Brian Crabb's books, this one is meticulously researched, copiously illustrated and an extraordinarily detailed account of a series of events, which, hitherto have not received such close attention from military historians. Out of a complex and difficult operation, Brian has produced an extremely interesting book in vivid detail, which I hope will go on to become the classic account of 'Operation Demon'.

Book Review of new book entitled OPERATION DEMON
by Matthew Smaldon - 26 January 2021

Operation Demon - The Evacuation of British Commonwealth Troops from Greece 1941

'Operation Demon' is the new book from author Brian James Crabb, and it tells the little known story of the evacuation of Allied troops from mainland Greece in April 1941.

In late April 1941, as the German Army overran the country, just over 51,000 Britsh, Australian and New Zealand troops were taken from the shores of Greece at night, to avoid the risk of Luftwaffe attacks. The evacuation did not run entirely to plan, and three ships - the Dutch troopship Slamat and HM destroyers Diamond and Wryneck on 27 April 1941, were tragically lost, leading to the loss of over 1,000 soldiers and sailors - a story little known today.

'Operation Demon' provides an intricate narrative of this episode of the Second World War, and is available as a limited edition illustrated hard back with extensive appendixes - some of which can be read on Brian's website (http://www.briancrabbmaritimebooks.co.uk)
This is a unique book and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean and the campaign in Greece and Crete during the Second World War.

 ROLL OF HONOUR

(Researched and compiled by Brian James Crabb)

KNOWN LIST OF CASUALTIES LOST DURING OPERATION 'LUSTRE' AND IN THE SINKING OF THE TWO DUTCH TROOPSHIPS SLAMAT AND PENNLAND AND THE TWO BRITISH DESTROYERS DIAMOND
AND WRYNECK ON 25 AND 27 APRIL 1941

Because of the nature of Operation 'Demon', which was carried out during the hours of darkness to eradicate the certainty of unopposed enemy air attack, no manifest was recorded before the Dutch troopship Slamat was boarded by Army personnel using caiques, schooners and smaller craft to transport them from the few convenient jetties and beaches in and around Návplion. When the author began to investigate the names of the people lost on 27 April 1941 he discovered a substantial shortfall. However, when he looked at the CWGC's Athens Memorial Registers he began to understand why. A majority of the Army casualties relevant to this story were dated as being lost on 26/27 April 1941. As the ship was actually sunk on 27 April the author has used his previous experience and recorded all the names of people lost between 25 and 30 April 1941, but has been careful enough to add the recorded date of death, where applicable. All other personnel are recorded as being lost on 27 April 1941 or dates that embrace that date. The following list records over a thousand names, but there is no way of knowing, for sure, that they were all on board the troopship Slamat when she was bombed and sunk. However, in the case of the crew members of Slamat, Diamond and Wryneck the lists supplied are accurate. All Army personnel listed below as missing have been cross-checked with Army records discovered at The National Archives at Kew, Richmond. The author, although he has been careful not to make any mistakes, apologises for any discrepancies.

Acronyms and abbreviations used in the following list of names:

NEW BOOK

A new book entitled 'Operation Demon' tells the story of the evacuation of Allied troops from mainland Greece in April 1941 and includes intricate details of the tragic loss of the Dutch troopship Slamat and HM destroyers Diamond and Wryneck on 27 April 1941.
This incredible book is now complete and has been edited and typeset and will be in print in December 2020. Below is a list of all the known casualties and the names of all of the few survivors. The reason for pre-releasing this researched list is to sound out any people who are interested in buying a copy of this relatively unknown story. The cost of printing this hard-backed book is substantial and as it goes into print, it would be reassuring to know how many people are interested in pre-ordering copies. The print run is 500. If anyone is interested in purchasing a copy please email: briancrabb@talktalk.net

The following list records 1,386 names, but there is no way of knowing, for sure, that they were all on board the troopship Slamat when she was bombed and sunk.
